Updating Hofstede’s cultural model and tracking changes in cultural indices

The applicability of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and tracking cultural transformations
This research article evaluates the applicability of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions in light of significant cultural transformations over the past four decades. By incorporating data from 2010 into the Tang and Koveos (TK) model, which previously analyzed cultural shifts from 1970 to 1990, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of cultural evolution from 1970 to 2010. The updated analysis reveals that individualism and power distance experienced notable changes between 1970 and 1990, while individualism and uncertainty avoidance shifted from 1990 to 2010. Furthermore, significant alterations in power distance, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance were observed across the entire 40-year span. The findings underscore the dynamic nature of the individualism dimension, emphasizing the necessity for ongoing modifications to cultural indices to reflect contemporary realities.
