Personality, chrono-nutrition and cardiometabolic health: A narrative review of the evidence
This 2020 narrative review studied the impact of personality on chrononutrition (based around timing of food intake), obesity, and cardiometabolic health. Chrono-nutrition covers frequency of meal consumption, timing of eating, and irregularity of energy intake throughout the day. The studies included by this review were identified by searching the MEDLINE database using the terms “personality,” “chrono-nutrition,” “cardiometabolic,” “BMI,” “obesity,” and “metabolic rate”. The available research indicated that people who are more conscientious had lower risk of obesity. In addition, the time of day at which people consumed energy was linked to obesity (since meals eaten in the evening have been associated with lower resting metabolic rate). Inconsistent timing and frequency of meals have also shown correlations with greater body weight and poorer cardiometabolic health. Overall, those who score highly in conscientiousness can maintain a healthy body weight possibly by regularly eating meals at the same time every day.
