PCIT-Health: Preventing Childhood Obesity by Strengthening the Parent–Child Relationship

While childhood obesity is an expensive public health concern, Neic et al. (2020) explain that it is preventable and the child’s risk can be potentially reduced by strengthening the parent-child relationship and by showing parents strategies to deal with their child’s general and health-related behaviors. Parents seeking to eliminate their child’s risk factors may benefit from prevention interventions that teach positive parenting and feeding practices. This review reviews the existing literature on childhood obesity interventions, while introducing parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) and describing how this adapted behavioral parent training program can be implemented.[NPID: parents, children, family, family relationships, parenting, childhood obesity, obesity prevention, interaction therapy, parent training]
