Mediterranean diet on sleep: A health alliance
Sleep disturbances are implicit in the pathology of chronic diseases and overall health derangements. Current research highlights the potential links between dietary patterns and sleep quality, in addition to the several benefits entailed in adopting a Mediterranean dietary pattern, including reduced oxidative stress, vascular dysfunction, inflammation, metabolic derangements, fatty tissue buildup, cognitive decline, senescence, tumorigenesis, neurodegeneration, and chronic pathological conditions relating to aging. This could be explained by the composition of the Mediterranean diet, being rich in antioxidants, and unsaturated fatty acids, and an overall healthy plant-based dietary pattern with the lowest rates of total mortality and noncommunicable disease occurrence. In this review by Scoditti et al. (2022), the authors present the available epidemiologic evidence on the influence of the Mediterranean diet on sleep quality and quantity. Analysis of the evidence brings forth a potential relationship between sleep duration and enhanced sleep quality with Mediterranean diet fidelity, presumably due to the effect of its distinct components. The authors comment on the current knowledge gaps necessitating further research and discuss possible mechanisms behind the influence of the Mediterranean diet on sleep.
