Systematic and narrative review of the mediating role of personal relationships between mental health and nutrition
The mediating role of interpersonal relationships between mental health and nutrition
The intricate relationship between nutrition and mental well-being has been extensively documented, with empirical evidence highlighting the bidirectional influence between dietary habits and psychological health. However, a significant gap persists in understanding the underlying mechanisms of this interaction. While prior research has focused on various biological and psychological mediators, the potential mediating role of interpersonal relationships remains underexplored. This article aims to fill this theoretical void by investigating how the quality of social interactions—considering both their intentional and experiential dimensions—may serve as a crucial mediator between nutrition and mental well-being. Employing a methodological approach that combines systematic and narrative reviews, the study seeks to propose a hypothesis regarding the role of interpersonal relationships as catalysts that enhance the effect of nutrients on mental health. Ultimately, the findings could pave the way for innovative dietary interventions and mental well-being programs that adopt a socially integrated perspective.
