Induced ketosis as a treatment for neuroprogressive disorders: food for thought?
In this article, Morris et al. (2020) explain the mechanisms by which induced ketosis might reduce mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress in neuropsychiatric disorders, and may be able to ameliorate abnormal levels of molecules and signaling pathways that appear to contribute to the pathophysiology of disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. In addition, the authors examine the safety data relating to induced ketosis over the long term and discuss future study design.
