Impact of associated factors and adherence to Mediterranean diet on insomnia among Arab men living in Jordan

The health and economic impacts of insomnia have prompted studies exploring its prevalence and potential predictors to use this information for prevention and treatment. Mahmoud et al. (2024) point to evidence on factors such as gender, ethnicity, and lifestyle habits being key predictors of insomnia. This study focused on examining the prevalence of insomnia and its potential predictors among Arab men in Jordan, including their adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD). This cross-sectional, correlational study included male participants aged 18 and older who could read, write, and speak Arabic. Participants (N = 529) completed online questionnaires assessing sociodemographic information, MD adherence, physical activity, and insomnia. Data analysis revealed a high prevalence of insomnia (53.9%) among the participants. In the unadjusted model, factors such as being unemployed, overweight, dehydrated, sleeping less than 6 hours per day, and high adherence to the MD were associated with insomnia. After adjusting for other variables, being married was found to have a protective effect against insomnia, while high adherence to the MD and sleeping less than 6 hours a day were identified as risk factors for insomnia. The study highlights a high prevalence of insomnia among Arab men in Jordan and identifies several predictors associated with insomnia. The unexpected association between high adherence to the MD and insomnia suggests the need for further research to better understand these factors and inform interventions to prevent and treat insomnia.
