How mindfulness influences restrictive eating through the mediation of body image: A diary report study
This study by Chu et al. (2025) explored whether body image serves as a mediator in the relationship between mindfulness, both as a trait and a state, and restrictive eating behaviors. A 6-day daily diary study was conducted with 65 women exhibiting restrictive eating patterns. Trait and state mindfulness were positively linked to each other and to positive body image. All three variables showed negative associations with restrictive eating behaviors. Reduced levels of restricted eating were linked to both trait and state mindfulness. Notably, body image fully mediated the relationship between state mindfulness and restrictive eating within individuals, indicating that day-to-day increases in mindfulness can improve body image, which in turn reduces unhealthy eating patterns. State mindfulness appears to reduce restrictive eating by enhancing body image. These findings emphasize the central role of body image in mindfulness-based strategies aimed at addressing disordered eating. To validate this process in a wider range of individuals, additional research is required. [NPID: State mindfulness, trait mindfulness, restrictive eating, body image, mediation effect]
