Gluten sensitivity presenting as a neuropsychiatric disorder
This 2014 review explains that there has been a case where gluten elimination in a patient with a longstanding history of visual and hearing hallucinations has induced a life-changing difference. Celiac disease was initially believed to be the sole source of the widespread prevalence of gluten sensitivity but Genuis & Lobo (2014) highlight that non-celiac gluten sensitivity is also triggered by gluten. However, the blood checks and intestinal findings of celiac disease are absent, and the symptoms improve/resolve within days or weeks of starting a gluten-free diet. Emerging scientific literature contains several reports linking gluten sensitivity states with neuropsychiatric manifestations including autism, schizophrenia, and ataxia (degenerative disease of the nervous system). Given the evidence presented, Genius & Lobo (2014) encourage physicians to routinely consider sensitivity issues if faced with otherwise inexplicable symptoms in neuropsychiatric cases.
