Functional abdominal pain and nutritional Status of children. A school-based study
This 2020 study explores functional abdominal pain disorders in children since these disorders account for 50% of all pediatric gastroenterology clinic visits. The goal of this study was to check whether being underweight or obese relates to the prevalence of functional abdominal pain disorders among children. Study participants were selected from 5 schools in Colombia. A total of 1030 patients enrolled in this experiment and were screened for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) using the Rome IV criteria. This assessment method helped with the diagnosis of FGID in 58 (5.8%) children. When comparing children diagnosed with FGID with those who were not diagnosed, there was no statistically significant difference in incidence of obesity, overweight, or increased abdominal circumference. It was discovered that functional abdominal pain disorders are not more common among obese children than among healthy children. Nutritional status cannot accurately predict the occurrence of functional abdominal pain disorders in children.
