Fruit and vegetables intake in adolescents and mental health: a systematic review
This 2020 literature review was conducted on the correlation between fruit and vegetable intake with mental health outcomes among adolescents. Głąbska et al. included papers found on PubMed and Web of Science databases that assessed the relationship between fruits and/or vegetables (including related products such as juices) and mental health. A range of positive, neutral, and negative variables related to psychological health were identified, such as happiness, self-esteem, health-related quality of life, mental health status, loneliness, general difficulties, feeling worried, anxiety, stress and distress, depressive symptoms, depression, and suicidal behaviors. Based on 17 relevant studies, it was suggested that higher fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with better mental health. Additionally, fresh fruits as well as green and yellow vegetables were especially highlighted as enhancers of general mental health.
