Food knowledge, habits, practices, and addiction among adolescents: A cross-sectional investigation
Shifts in lifestyles and eating habits impact adolescents’ nutritional needs and consumption. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study by Hantira et al. (2023) is to evaluate the dietary practices, degree of knowledge, and dietary behaviors among adolescents and investigate the existence of food addiction. Three hundred sixty-three teenagers chosen from two youth centers completed the General Nutritional Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire (GNKQ), the Adolescent Food Habits Checklist (AFHC), and version 2.0 of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS 2.0). Data analysis showed that participants ranged from 10 to 19 years old, with a third of the adolescents (33.7%) fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for food addiction. 51.8% of the participants said they made low-fat meal selections. No statistically significant links were discovered between the participants’ eating behaviors and food addiction. The majority of the adolescents who were investigated engaged in harmful eating habits, which prompted the authors to stress that, among this demographic, food addiction is seen as a serious health risk. Implementing school-based interventions to encourage favorable eating habits and providing nutritional education to teenagers and their families are thus strongly advised.
