Evaluation of symptoms and symptom combinations in histamine intolerance
The aim of this 2019 study was to evaluate gastrointestinal and extraintestinal symptoms in patients with histamine intolerance (HIT). Schnedl et al. (2019) found 133 outpatients that showed signs of HIT and sent each individual a questionnaire with symptoms of HIT including gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory and skin complaints. Sixty-two outpatients completed the questionnaire which, after analysing, revealed bloating was the most common and most serious symptom reported, followed by postprandial fullness (unpleasant sensation like prolonged persistence of food in the stomach), diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. The study also discovered 276 symptom combinations arose from the presence of just 2 of the 24 listed symptoms. Hopefully, the discovery of the wide variability of symptoms and complex symptom combinations in patients with HIT can help with the clinical recognition and diagnosis of HIT.
