Effects of probiotics on anxiety, stress, mood and fitness of badminton players

In this 2021 study, 13 university badminton players were randomly chosen to either receive a probiotic or a placebo drink for six weeks. The subjects’ fitness levels were monitored through various tests and exercises such as the 20-meter shuttle runs, handgrips, vertical jumps, 40-meter dash, and the T-test. In addition, the researchers wanted to determine the effect of taking probiotics on the badminton players’ competitive anxiety, perceived stress, and mood. These psychological outcomes were assessed by administering questionnaires. Anxiety and stress levels decreased considerably (by 16% and 21% respectively) in the probiotic group after 6 weeks. In contrast, there was no difference found in the placebo group. The athletes taking probiotics also demonstrated enhanced aerobic capacity during the intervention. But the probiotic supplementation did not seem to affect speed, strength, leg power, or agility. Benefits of taking probiotics included better aerobic capacity and less anxiety and stress.
