Effect of vitamin D and magnesium supplementation on behavior problems in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

This 2020 study explored the effects of vitamin D and magnesium supplementation on behavior problems in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Sixty-six children recruited from a hospital in Iran were randomly selected to either receive both vitamin D (50,000 IU/week) and magnesium (6 mg/kg/day) supplements or placebos for 8 weeks. Blood samples demonstrated significant increases in levels of 25-hydroxy-Vitamin D3 and magnesium in the intervention group after the 8 weeks, compared with the controls. Along with this, these supplements led to marked drops in conduct problems, social problems, and anxiety/shy scores. The vitamin D and magnesium supplementation did not seem to affect psychosomatic problems score. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin D and magnesium was effective in reducing conduct and social issues, and anxiety/shyness in children with ADHD.
