Education, nutrition, and psychology effects on preventing the Female Athlete Triad.

The female athlete triad is a phenomenon that affects young female athletes and is characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD), poor energy availability (EA), and menstrual disruption. While all three diseases are part of the triad, a diagnosis does not always need the occurrence of all three simultaneously. This review by Patel et al. (2024) aims to identify preventative strategies in sports by examining available information on the female athlete triad. Using the PubMed database, an analysis of 23 published sources revealed vital suggestions related to nutrition, psychological aspects, and educational resources. To improve prevention, coaches, parents, athletes, and medical professionals are advised to become knowledgeable about risk factors, warning indicators, and diagnosis. Studies have shown that relationships between coaches and athletes, eating disorders, and self-esteem problems should all be assessed and treated with therapy. Lastly, appropriate nutritional education, nutritional counseling, and maintaining EA were included in the dietary guidelines. The authors recommend early intervention with appropriate education, psychological support, and nutritional management to stop the development of the female athlete triad.
