Association between sugar-wweetened beverage consumption and executive function among Chinese Tibetan adolescents at high altitude
Zhang et al. (2022) conducted their study to investigate the impact of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) on executive function (EF). To do so, a sample of 1427 adolescents underwent an evaluation of their EF (N-back shift task, more-odd shifting task, and modified Eriksen flanker task) identifying three core EF domains of interest (working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility). Analysis of the results revealed that adolescents who drank ≥2 SSB per week demonstrated poorer EF scores compared to their peers who did not drink SSB, compelling the authors to conclude that SSB intake results in EF derangements amongst adolescents. The authors recommend establishing guidelines for SSB in adolescents to protect their cerebral development. [NPID: Sugar sweetened beverages, executive function, adolescents, brain development]
