Advances in diet and physical activity in breast cancer prevention and treatment

Prevention and Management of Breast Cancer

Interest is increasing in how certain diets and physical activity routines can aid in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer (BC). Research continues to support the idea that the Mediterranean diet and regular exercise both contribute to lowering the risk of developing BC. Among individuals already diagnosed with BC, these lifestyle changes may also reduce the chance of tumor recurrence and enhance overall quality of life. The possibility of other dietary strategies, such as calorie restriction, ketogenic diets, intermittent fasting, and plant-based or vegan eating, to increase the efficacy of cancer therapies is also being investigated. This review by Khalifa, Guijarro & Nencioni (2024) explores the biological basis for using these dietary and physical activity interventions in the prevention and management of breast cancer (BC) and summarizes existing and ongoing clinical research. It provides meaningful insights into how these lifestyle strategies may be used as supportive therapies in breast cancer care.
