Adherence to the Mediterranean diet, level of physical activity and body dissatisfaction in subjects 16-50 years old in the Region of Murcia, Spain

In this descriptive, cross-sectional study by Guillén Alcolea et al. (2021), the authors investigated the relationship between obesity, Mediterranean diet fidelity, body dissatisfaction, and physical activity, in a sample of 85 participants of similar socio-demographics, aged between 16-50 years (mean age 28.68± 8.846, men n = 58) derived from three sports centers. The participants had their anthropometric data recorded, their Mediterranean diet adherence evaluated, and submitted a test for body dissatisfaction (BSQ) and an International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Analysis of the results revealed that most of the study participants scored low on IPAQ, indicating lower levels of physical activity, however, men were substantially more active than women. Women, on the other hand, were more substantially dissatisfied with their body image and showed no differences compared to men in terms of BMI and eating habits. Moreover, most of the overweight participants had medium to low Mediterranean diet adherence scores, were more dissatisfied with their bodies, and were substantially less physically active compared to their peers who were not overweight. Through this work, the authors highlight the relationship between low Mediterranean diet adherence scores and body dissatisfaction in individuals 16-50 years of age, and that women are significantly more concerned with their body image compared to men.
