Norepinephrine, also known as noradrenaline, is a neurotransmitter and hormone that plays an important role in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which coordinates the body’s “fight or flight” response. In the brain, norepinephrine helps regulate attention, alertness, arousal, motivation, learning, and emotional responses. In the body, it also contributes to cardiovascular functions such as maintaining blood pressure and increasing heart rate during periods of stress or heightened demand. Because of these functions, balanced norepinephrine activity is important for both psychological well-being and physical adaptation to everyday challenges.
Nutrition can influence the biological processes involved in norepinephrine production and regulation. The amino acid tyrosine is a precursor to norepinephrine and can be obtained from protein-rich foods such as eggs, dairy products, fish, poultry, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Tyrosine is converted into L-DOPA and then dopamine, which can subsequently be converted into norepinephrine. This pathway means that adequate availability of certain nutrients supports the biochemical processes involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, although consuming more of a precursor does not necessarily translate into higher norepinephrine levels.
